Effective Communication?
by Yuche Yahya on Sep.09, 2011, under Creative Teaching
Have you ever thought the barriers of effective communication? Yesterday I listened to myself and tried to make a list of them.
My first question to myself was ”What is good listening?”
My motto is for this issue ”Talking is sharing, but listening is caring.” -anonymous
When we feel this caring?I realize If someone listens me, give time and support, I feel happy. I am aware of that now. Good listening is not advice giving. Think about the last time someone freely offered you advice, especially if it was unsolicited. Chances are it fell on deaf ears. We generally tend not to hear the advice no matter what the source.
Even if the student asks for advice, giving it is not necessarily the best thing to do. There is an old Chinese proverb: ”Give me a fish and eat for a day; teach me to fish and I eat forever.” It is far more important to equip our students with the skills needed to face and solve life’s challenges than to ease their short term discomfort. When we prematurely give advice, we rob their valuable learning experience.

fewer or less?
by Yuche Yahya on Jun.28, 2010, under Grammar, Lectures
The words “less” and “fewer” have similar meanings. However, they cannot be used interchangeably.
Let’s see our classic grammar book explaining about these words:
Classic theory:
Use “fewer” when referring to number among things counted . Use “less” when making comparisons among quantity or amount (non-count)
Here’s an easy rule of thumb:
Use “fewer” to modify a plural noun.
Example: I have fewer papers to write than last year.
Use “less” to modify a singular noun.
Example: You’ll need less time if you type your report using this machine.
Modern English:
Okay, for thousand of years that theory is accepted among grammarian as well as English teachers all over the world. Now, I want to CHANGE the theory for I found critical fault there.
Some standard phrases go against the guideline (Write your answer in 100 words or less; He made one less mistake this time), while less is also used with mass nouns when the noun is measured in increments or fractions. Time, distance, money, statistical figures and mathematical amounts can be segmented this way, so one writes:
less than six months
five kilometres or less
less than Rp. 1.000.000
10 is less than 12½
Getting confused? Ask me for not getting lost!! huehehe..
